Designing a wind Turbine

Project information

About the Project

This project was assigned to selected undergraduates as part of the Atlato (Pty) Ltd Internship Program, with the objective of enhancing our knowledge and skills in 3D Modelling, CFD, FEA, and Numerical Modelling.

My Contribution

I developed parametric 3D models of the wind turbine using FreeCAD, allowing key dimensions such as blade count and bolt configuration to be easily adjusted through a spreadsheet.
A numerical model was implemented in Python to calculate rotor speed and torque under varying wind conditions.
Finite Element Analysis (FEA) was carried out using PrePoMax to evaluate the structural stability of the assembly under wind loads.
Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations were performed with OpenFOAM to accurately determine the lift and drag coefficients of the turbine blades.
